Fitting (Distribution & Transmission) Courses

Fitter Training covers all aspect of construction and maintenance of distribution and transmission substation apparatus. Utility and Construction Training have developed a universal training workshop that will allow craft training of 3 groups of learners in same trade or 3 separate trades simultaneously.

The workshop is designed to facilitate safe supervision and strict control over electrical interaction in those early stages of trade skills training.

Jointing bays, Fitting workshop and low level wood pole over head line facilities that can be energised to maintain high training standards, and quality delivery methods to enhance the experience of learners and prepare them for real life work environment.

Fitting training is split in to 2 main areas;

– Distribution (LV to 33kV)

– EHV (132kV to 400kV)

PNC Apprenticeships for stand alone modules in Fitting skills.

Substation Secondary Wiring Training for fitters

Fitting requires a wide range of skills, substation lighting and power training gives them versatility in the job role.

Distribution Fitting Training undertaken on common LV, 11kv substation apparatus.

Distribution Fitting includes maintenance of switch gear and transformers, installation of remote customer isolation and skills to move heavy loads in restricted complex routes.

Oil Sampling Testing and Handling.

Oil Training is supported by TRANSOIL Ltd and Grosvenor Power, which includes a tour of the laboratory and over view of testing undertaken for DNO’s nationwide.

Maintenance of Distribution Plant and Apparatus.


Fitters licence for boom MEWP is a valuable asset to gain access to high structures.

Slinger Signaller

Competence in lifting heavy loads and using correct signals to get loads to correct required locations

Machine Banksperson

Ensuring safety for machine operators, a fitter can be involved in banks person role when on site.

Exothermic Welding

Reliable set up for Furse exothermic welding of common earth tape sizes used in substations.

Installation of concrete anchors for LV/HV operations Fitters

An introduction to HV and LV operations, skills to operate the LV network, writing and following switching programs

Panel Wiring for Substation Fitters

Installation of multicore cables to new or existing control panels, includes glanding, looming, crimping, ferruling and testing, also basic containment will be included.

Vehicle Marshalling and Machine Banksman

Skills for guiding reversing vehicles and safe guidance for machine operators with banks man training and vehicle marshalling.

Substation Earthing and Anchors

Fabrication of earth tape for installation includes cutting, bending, forming and brazing, along with fixtures and anchored punching and bolting for common install requirements


Experienced operatives and apprentices can undertake nationally recognised diploma in the Utility trade

The diploma is the recognised competency based qualification for the power industry; it can be achieved as a stand-alone qualification or as part of the level 2 apprenticeship framework for the power sector.

This qualification is achieved by the production of a portfolio of evidence to prove competence against the standards, although the physical evidence will come from the delegate the portfolio will be completed with the aid of the assessor to collate and link the evidence provided by the delegate to the individual standards. This assessor lead approach minimises the operational down time for the delegate. E- portfolio available for computer literate reducing printed evidence with upload facility.

Fitting programmes are modular to facilitate the learning process and to allow time to impart knowledge learned in on site conditions.

Fitting is split in to Distribution (LV to 33kV), and EHV (132kV to 400kV)

Delegates should be able to prove competence in the following areas;

  • Working safely and efficiently in the power sector
  • Compliance with legislative and industry standards with regards to Health, Safety and the Environment
  • Use and communication of technical information
  • Safe access and egress to site including working at height
  • Correct installation and dismantling techniques relevant to substation plant and equipment.
  • Electrical testing of apparatus , or installation of substation earthing systems
  • Fault repair on substation plant, or substation inspection

All of the performance criteria must be evidenced. The requisite evidence is attained through completion of the relevant skill based units on a minimum of three separate occasions.

Diplomas are valid for life


UCT can deliver the following Level 3, City & Guilds, qualifications in Substation Fitting

  • Level 3 Diploma – Substation Plant
  • Level 3 Diploma – Lead Substation Crafts Person
  • Level 3 Technical Certificate – Distribution and Transmission

In addition, UCT can also deliver the Energy and Utility Skills (EUS) Level 3 Trailblazer – Substation Plant Fitter

As a prerequisite, all programs require learners to have a minimum grade C GCSE in Maths and English Language

For experienced workers, the level 3 diplomas are available as stand-alone qualifications in substation fitting, this is sufficient to meet the requirements of Lloyds as a demonstration of competence in this field of power engineering.


Training and Assessment in the methods of fitting construction and maintenance, courses are designed to give apprentices a sound working knowledge of a wide variety of Fitting work and obtain knowledge of safe working practices and the practical skills and techniques to enable them to become valuable members of the workforce.

Fitter formal training and assessment is supported by a technical certificate, diploma and on site experience to gain a well-rounded experience.

EHV GIS/GIB installation

requires a high standard of assembly skills. The EHV Fitting Apprenticeship includes cutting edge high voltage gas insulated bus section assembly as well as AIS apparatus assembly, panel wiring and auxiliary apparatus construction.

AIS Construction

Air insulated system component construction includes steel work construction and erection of switchgear used at EHV voltages.

EHV Core Skills

Earthing installation using braising/exothermic welding skills, concrete anchor installation, multi-core wiring and containment construction are all key aspects of providing fitting skills to quickly contribute to site skills.

GIS/GIB Construction

Skills required connecting sections of Gas insulated bus sections and interconnections are practices to enable easy integration of fitters into fitting teams constructing large scale GIS installations
