The Access, Movement & Egress registration scheme is intended for all persons who will be required to carry out duties on or near operational plant and equipment in transmission and / or distribution electricity environments. It replaces the previous Basic Electrical Safety Competence (BESC) scheme, however to aid recognition for delegates transferring to the new schemes the ‘BESC’ notation has been retained.

The scheme standards cover the basic requirements for safely entering, moving around and exiting work areas in electrical environments.

AME assessments are available in the following areas of electrical transmission and distribution:

  • Underground Cables

The Utility Safety Health and Environment Awareness (SHEA) portfolio of schemes have been developed in conjunction with industry to provide a uniform approach to health, safety and environmental awareness training across the utilities sector, in line with Health and Safety Executive guidelines.

The power scheme is designed for all persons involved in the operational activities of the electricity transmission and distribution industries who require access to sites, both permanent and temporary, including all levels of operatives, supervisors and management. A Utility SHEA (Power) card lasts for three years from the date of training.

Utility SHEA (Power) comprises of eight modules. The six core modules are common to all utility industries and form the basis of health, safety and environmental law and practices. It is designed to provide on-site evidence that an individual has demonstrated an appropriate level of knowledge and awareness.

The two industry specific modules cover;

  • Power generation and distribution
  • Power industry hazards

This course is designed for anybody working in a highways environment, such as street lighting, the courses aims to provide delegates with the knowledge & practical key skills required for work in the vicinity of DNO equipment, including overhead power lines, the removal and replacement of DNO cut-out fuse carriers in a safe and responsible manner to comply with company and legislative policies

The group has standardised basic safety training and devised a core curriculum which has now become a national training scheme.
