Technical Certificate Courses

This is the recognised technical knowledge based qualification for the power industry which underpins the practical qualifications. Skills required to operate the network including LV fusing linking , producing switching programs, commission testing and related skills.

Level 2 Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering – Distribution and Transmission (Technical Knowledge) (2339-17)

This is the recognised technical knowledge based qualification for the power industry; it can be achieved as a stand-alone qualification or as part of the level 2 apprenticeship framework for the power sector.

There are no official pre requisites, however we recommend that learners hold GCSE grade C or above to confirm sufficient knowledge to be able to achieve the math element of this qualification.

There are two attendance options;

Candidates who are registered as an apprentice will have a combined delivery model;

Open learning for Mod 1, 3 and 4, with workshops to consolidate learning and prepare for exams.

Workshps comprise of;

Unit 1 – 2 Days

Unit 3 – 3 Days

Unit 4 – 4 Days

Block release for Mod 2 (Maths), 3 x 5 Days

Tutorials, plus exam days., giving a total attendance of 25 days including induction day.


This qualification can be achieved by Open learning model; this comprises if an induction half day attendance, and arranged exam days for the 4 units, spread over a 12 month period.

Successful delegates will have proved technical knowledge in the following topics;

  • Working safely and efficiently in the power sector.
  • Compliance with legislative and industry standards with regards to Health, Safety and the Environment.
  • Use and communication of technical information.
  • Mathematics in Power Engineering.
  • Mechanical and electrical theory in Power Engineering.
  • Electricity supply networks, plant and apparatus.
  • Overhead Line installations.
  • Underground cable installations.
  • Substation installation

Exams are held after each module is complete and is in the form of multichoice and written papers.

Mentors are recommended within your company organisation.

Program is supported by tutor sessions which can be increased or decrease dependant on company requirements

Duration usually 12 months, however this will be dependent on the learner and how fast they progress.

To complete the award within 12 months and attain good grades using an open learning package candidates are expected to complete a number of learning hours per week, hours required will be dependent on the learning capabilities of the candidate.
